2C Flashcards
What does a neuron do
basic building block of the nervous system
responsible for communicating information in both chemical and electrical forms
They carry information/messages in the form of an neural impulse
what is a motor neuron
carry messages from the CNS to the cells in skeletal muscles, organs and glands and stimulate activity
what is a sensory neuron
Receive and carry sensory info from organs to the CNS, help us to sense the external world and monitor changes within our bodies
what is an inter neuron
Interconnect various neurons within the brain or the spinal cord.
They enable simple reflexes
what does the soma do
Combines neural information received from dendrites and sends to the axon
what does the nucleus do
Contains the biochemical information that maintains the neuron and keeps it functioning
what does the dendrite do
Picks up information from receptors of other neurons
what does the axon do
Carries neural information from the cell body towards other neurons
what does the myelin do
White fatty substance that insulates the axon and allows for quicker transmission
what do neurotransmitters
a chemical released from a neuron
what are glial cells
support and protect the neuron
