2D Flashcards
What are the three parts of the brain
Hind brain
Fore brain
Mid brain
Hindbrain functions and parts
hindbrain- control motor functions and vital, automatic responses
e.g. breathing and heart rate
Cerebellum- coordinates movement and regulates posture and balance.
creates automatic seamless movement
Pons- regulates sleep, arousal, dreaming, breathing and some muscle movement.
Medulla- controls vital survival functions, e..g. heart rate, coughing, sneezing, vomiting
Midbrain functions and parts
involved with movement, processing of sensory information, sleep and arousal
Forebrain functions and parts
regulates complex cognitive processes such as thinking, learning, memory and perception
Cerebrum- responsible for cognitive processes (learning, memory)- receives and processes incoming and outgoing information.
Thalamus- receives information from sensory organs and passes it to relevant parts of the brain
- Hypothalamus- regulates body’s internal environment
- Corpus callosum- Bridge/mass of nerve fibres connecting the right and left cerebral hemispheres
Function of the left hemisphere
Receives sensory information from the right side of the body
Language and verbal functions
Functions of the right hemisphere
Receives sensory information from the left side of the body
Controls movement on the left side of the body
Non verbal tasks.
what are the four lobes and their functions
Frontal lobe- Receives sensory information from the left side of the body. Non-verbal task
Parietal lobe- Responsible for sense of touch, detection of movement and location of objects.
Occipital lobe- determines if you understand what you are looking at
Temporal lobe- Processes auditory information
what is the brocas area
located in frontal lobe responsible for the articulation of speech
what is the Werrnicke’s Area
located in temporal lobe. comprehension of language and forming meaningful sentences
what is the Auditory cortex
registers and processes auditory information. left side responsible for verbal sound. Right side is responsible for non verbal sounds.
what is the visual cortex
Receives visual information. located in occipital lobe.
what is the somatosensory cortex
Receives sensory information from skin receptors. Located in Parietal lobe.
what is reticular information
a network of neurons
- regulate alertness
- modify muscle movement
