Affective Disorders
disturbances in mood or emotion; states of extreme happiness or sadness occur and mood can alternate without cause; moods can become extreme and unrealistic
- bipolar: alternating depression and mania
- depression: slower mental/physical activity, lower self-esteem
- mania: constantly active, elation and self-confidence
Dissociative Disorders
when a person unconsciously dissociates (separates) one part of the mind from the rest
- multiple personality: 2 or more independent personalities
- psychogenic amnesia: amnesia produced by the mind with no physical cause (forgets all aspects of past)
Neuroses
individuals exhibiting fear and maladaptive strategies in dealing with stressful or everyday stimuli
-not dealing with psychosis, no delusions, usually do realize they have a problem
- anxiety: constant high tension and overreactions
- OCD: O-persistent thoughts that won’t leave; C-repetitive ritual behaviors the pt cannot stop performing
- phobia disorder: excessive fear of objects
Personality Disorders
usually ongoing patterns of dysfunctional behavior
- antisocial
- borderline behavior
- narcissistic behavior
- psychopathic personality
Schizophrenia Disorders
psychotic in nature and present with disorganization of thought, hallucinations, emotional dysfunction, anxiety, and perceptual impairments
-causative factors: traumatic events, genetics, biochemical imbalances, env.
- catatonic
- disorganized
- paranoid
Somatoform Disorders
classified based on physical symptoms present in each disorder
- conversion disorder: physical complaints of neurological basis with no underlying cause
-paralysis is the most common finding - hypochondriasis disorder: excessive fear of illness
- somatization disorder: sxs with no physiological basis
Pharmacology
antianxiety agents
antidepressant agents
antipsychotic agents
bipolar disorder agents
sedative-hypnotic agents
common side effects: sedation/grogginess
*avoid excessive heat
