Affective Disorders

A

disturbances in mood or emotion; states of extreme happiness or sadness occur and mood can alternate without cause; moods can become extreme and unrealistic

  1. bipolar: alternating depression and mania
  2. depression: slower mental/physical activity, lower self-esteem
  3. mania: constantly active, elation and self-confidence

Dissociative Disorders

A

when a person unconsciously dissociates (separates) one part of the mind from the rest

  1. multiple personality: 2 or more independent personalities
  2. psychogenic amnesia: amnesia produced by the mind with no physical cause (forgets all aspects of past)

Neuroses

A

individuals exhibiting fear and maladaptive strategies in dealing with stressful or everyday stimuli
-not dealing with psychosis, no delusions, usually do realize they have a problem

  1. anxiety: constant high tension and overreactions
  2. OCD: O-persistent thoughts that won’t leave; C-repetitive ritual behaviors the pt cannot stop performing
  3. phobia disorder: excessive fear of objects

A

-causative factors: traumatic events, genetics, biochemical imbalances, env.

Somatoform Disorders

A

classified based on physical symptoms present in each disorder

  1. conversion disorder: physical complaints of neurological basis with no underlying cause
    -paralysis is the most common finding
  2. hypochondriasis disorder: excessive fear of illness
  3. somatization disorder: sxs with no physiological basis
