Imaging Flashcards
X-ray
Commonly used for visualizing bones
Diagnostic tool for issues related to bones
Chest X-ray can also be used to diagnose lung conditions such as pneumonia and COPD
Low density (Soft tissue) structures do not absorb X-rays as well so they do not show up
Ultrasound
Noninvasive procedure that uses sound waves to produce images of structures within the body, especially internal organs
Shows not only an image, but the movement of the structure since it is in real time
Doppler Ultrasound
A specific form of ultrasound that evaluates blood flow from major arteries, veins, and cerebrovascular system
Can also provide auditory output in addition to a visual projection
Venography
Invasive procedure
Uses X-ray and contrast dye to visualize the venous system
Mainly used for LE visualization with dye injected through foot
- can also be used for UE visualization or inferior vena cava
Helpful for diagnosing DVT, tumors, valve dysfunction, or other venous system pathology
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Invasive procedure
Uses radiography and an injected radionuclide to determine the metabolic activity of an organ or tissue
Commonly used in oncology (malignant tumors), neurology (IDing brain diseases), and cardiology (IDing impaired blood flow)
