What is dementia?
Not a disease in its own right. Deterioration in intellectual functioning and social behaviour. Differences in presentation.
What is the demography of dementia?
Around 800,000 in the UK and 17,000 aged under 65. Over-represented in women and people in care homes. Future increases in prevelance.
What are the syndromes and symptoms?
Alzheimers, vascular etc
Subtle onset, symptom under-reporting, lack of self-awareness
Loss of personhood
What are the phramacological treatments available?
AChE inhibitors
NMDA receptor antagonists (amantidine)
Psychiatric drugs
What is the national dementia strategy?
Awareness, early intervention, information and care access.
