A person’s biological status - male/female
What is gender?
Learned or cultural status. Masculine/feminine.
What are the factors in gender determination?
Prenatal hormones, genitalia, parents and gender identity.

Reproductive or sexual anatomy not standard for female or male.
What is the parental influence on gender?
As role models
Through child-parent interactions
Gender-appropriate toys and activities
What is social learning theory?
Rewards for ‘masculine’ behaviour and punishment for ‘feminine’ behaviour -> imitating males -> male gender identity
What is cognitive developmental theory?
Male gender identity = male gender
At what age do children acquire the concept of gender identity?
2-3 years
At what age do children acquire the concept of gender stability?
4 years
At what age do children acquire the concept of gender constancy?
4-5 years
How are gender roles shaped?
Family - siblings, extended family
Peers - encourage separation, prejudice, difference
School - structure, teacher behaviour
