What factors affect quality of life?
Physical health, psychological factors, level of independence, social relationships, relationship to the environment and personal relationship.
What is an outcome indicator?
Used by governments to plan for society (housing, health, welfare, ageing, childcare, etc). Individual’s QoL rating.
What features might a QoL questionnaire have?
Multi-dimensional - different aspects of his/her life.
Dynamic - changes over time (transient/permanent)
Subjective - his/her judgement within his/her culture
Who devised the ‘Important values in your life’ questionnaire?
Rokeach
What is the association with severity of illness and QoL for most illnesses and what is an exception?
Non-linear negative association. Parkinson’s is an exception - linear.
What is health-related quality of life?
The functional effect of a medical condition and/or its therapy, as assessed by the patient.
What are Patient Reported Outcome Measures?
Patient ratings of the effects of a disease, condition and/or treatment.
Why might a person with chronic illness rate their QoL as higher than a healthy person?
Response shift - change internal standards, values re-evaluated
