psychodynamic therapy - dream analysis Flashcards
what are the 5 main processes of DA
symbolism, secondary elaboration, representation, condensation, displacement
what is the manifest content
the content that the dreamer remembers and recalls to the therapist
what is the latent content
the true meaning of a dream
what is the aim of dream work
to reverse the process of dream work and reveal the manifest content back into the latent content
what psychodynamic assumptions can be applied to dream work
the unconscious mind and the tripartite levels of personality
how does the unconscious mind assumption like to DA
when there are conflicts in the unconscious these come about in dreams and the aim of DA is to make the unconscious conscious so you can figure out your hidden desires masked by the unconscious
how does the tripartite levels of personality link with DA
researchers found that when you’re dreaming the rational part of your mind (ego) is inactive, letting the ID run free and revealing your hidden desires in your dreams
1 strength of DA - effectiveness
Matt and Novato (1997) did 63 meta analyses and they found 75% of patients showed improvements
1 weakness of DA - effectiveness
DA is less common - not many people believe in it so less people are using it-less research
