behaviourist classic evidence- Watson and Raynor Flashcards
what is the study for behaviourist classic evidence
little albert- classical conditioning
what type of experiment was little albert study
a controlled observation
what was stage 1 of little albert study
establishing a conditioned emotional response ( conditioning the fear of the white rat into albert) (11months 3 days - 11mths 10 days)
what was stage 2 little albert study
transferring the conditioned response onto other stimuli - generalisation (presented with things that LOOK like the white rat to see if he is scared, changing settings to see it this make a difference) (11mths 15 days - 11mths 20 days)
what’s was stage 3 little albert study
exploring the effects of time on conditioned emotional responses ( seeing how persistent the fear is over time) (12mths 21 days)
on ethical issue in little albert study
risk of stress anxiety humiliation or pain- he was distressed throughout- in order to make this more ethical the research should have been cancelled when the negative effects were clear and he should have been counter conditioned to not fear the rat any more
one positive of the little albert study
watson and raynor had lots of control in this experiment and were able to control extraneous variables- increases external validity
what were the findings and conclusions of the little albert study
s1- they were able to condition the fear into him
s2- the fear could be generalised but lessened when the setting was changed
s3- fear response weakened but was still there over time
CONCLUSION- it is probable that many phobias is psychology have been conditioned and the persistence of these phobias increase in weak willed people
what are some social implications of W+R
in advertising - using happy and repetitive music to condition customer to feel happy- associate happiness with product - more likely to buy
what is one ethical issue of w&r
protection from harm - they never counter conditioned albert’s fear - could affect beyond study (w&r said they wanted to and didn’t get the chance)
one positive ethical issue of w&r
confidentiality - little albert ‘albert b’ code name nobody knows real identity
one positive in evaluation of methodology w&r
high internal reliability - standardised procedure each observation followed set structure in detail. consistency across observations
one negative in evaluation of methodology w&r
study only done on 1 participant. we can’t assume others learn fear through conditioning the same way. low population validity
