psychodynamic approach - 'behaviour can be influenced by the unconsious mind' Flashcards
describe the conscious mind
thoughts we are aware of, smallest part of ‘iceberg’ brain, perceptions e.g rational and logical thoughts
describe the pre conscious mind
what could be conscious if we took effort to access, memories, knowledge
describe the unconscious mind
cannot be accessed, thoughts, feeling that influence out behaviour but we are not aware of, biggest part of mind, most influential
what is regression
the abandonment of age appropriate coping strategies, reverting to child like patterns of behaviour - retreating to a time where a person feels safe
what is repression
pushing out bad experiences or emotions into the unconscious so you no longer have to think about them, you can no longer remember the event
what is displacement
transferring undesirable impulses from one person to an object or another person e.g getting mad and someone and punching a wall
what is projection
undesirable thoughts or emotions attributed to someone else, conscience thinks it is unacceptable for YOU to feel it so projects it onto someone else e.g someone who has a bad temper complains that someone else gets angry easily
describe the example for the ‘unconscious mind’ assumption
it is schizophrenia. people who believe in the psychodynamic approach think that conflict in the unconscious mind causes schizophrenia symptoms like delusions or hallucinations. e.g a fixation in the oral stage is created in childhood, in adulthood, when they experience too much stress, they REGRESS back to the oral stage, but here the ego is not fully formed, leaving the ID to run free, explaining things like voices in your head telling you to do things like stealing things you want
