cognitive approach - ‘behaviour can be explained by internal mental processes’ Flashcards
what is perception?
the outcome of what we understand an object to be based on attention and memory
what is attention?
we focus on an object (sensory stimuli)
what is memory?
searching through out memory store seeing if there is a ‘match’ with something we’ve already seen/experienced
what is language?
being able to communicate (speech,body)
what do cognitive psychologists see humans as?
information processors
what is the internal mental processes example
criminal behaviour: hostile attribution bias
describe the HAB example
a hostile attribution bias is a type of cognitive bias where some individuals interpret behaviour of others in various situations as threatening or aggressive. the person PERCEIVES the situation as hostile when it isn’t. E.G someone bumps your shoulder on a busy street. person with HAB interprets that as a personal attack and start a fight, leading to aggravated assault and being arrested (criminal behaviour)
what order do 4 of the cognitive processes come in
attention, memory, perception, language (AMPL)
who pioneered the cognitive approach?
Wundt
