What is Denial?

A

The mind blocks out the information and it is not recognised as valid.

What is repression?

A

Wipes the event from the mind and is sent to the unconscious, that being said it can still come out slowly in different forms such as anxiety. The person will seem as if they have forgotten the event entirely.

What is displacement?

A

Any anger is taken out on a more suitable target. E.g slamming a door instead of shouting at someone.

A

A therapy to understand a persons unconscious. Often referred to as ‘the talking cure’.

What is the ID?

A

The selfish part of one’s mind that seeks pleasure. If this is dominant it can result in things such as addictions. This develops between birth and 18 months.

What is the Ego?

A

The ego is the reality conscious and is what balances the ID and Superego. This means that all people require a strong Ego as to not develop mental illnesses. It is motivated by the reality principle. Develops between 1 and 3.

What is the Superego?

A

The Superego acts as the conscience of right and wrong. This comes with parental and societal values while being motivated by the morality principle. It develops between 3 and 6 and if it is dominant can lead to OCD or cause someone to be a perfectionist.

What is the oral stage?

A

This stage is when the baby seeks pleasure (birth to 1) from the mouth weather its by sucking its thumb or being breast/bottle fead. This stage is complete when the baby has been weened. If this stage is unsuccessful the baby may develop addictions such as smoking or drinking later in life.

What is the anal stage?

A

This stage is when the baby fist gets control of something. In this case it is potty training. This is between 1 and 3. If this is done too late or early it Mary result in the person having an anal personality (uptight).

What is the phallic stage?

A

This stage involves the baby getting the desire for love from the mother and the want to get rid of the father as they see him as a rival. If this stage is successful then the baby will understand it gender as to weather it is a boy or a girl. It will also develop his fathers morals and principles. It lasts room 3 to 6. This stage is show with the case study of little Hans.

What is the latent stage?

A

This stage requires little requirement to succeed. It is mostly just the child hood and is from 6 - puberty and is seen as the lull before the storm of puberty. During this stage the child will make friends of the same sex and just have fun.

What is the genital stage?

A

This lasts from puberty to adulthood. It’s main goal is to create heathy adult relationships. This has a focus on the genitals but not to the extent of the phallic stage. This stage should be a success if the previous stages have been completed correctly before.
