forgetting (pro and retro) Flashcards
what is proactive interference?
new information being interfered with by old information
what is retroactive interference?
old information being interfered with by new information
what did postman 1960 find?
a lab exp with two groups of participants leaning paired words
the exp group needed to learn an extra list and all needed to recall
the control group had better accuracy of the two
this shows retroactive interference and the old information was interfered with be the new
what did Beddeley and Hitch find 1977
rugby players to recall teams they had played that season
interview some who missed more games than others
recall of last game played was equal for all so it was not decay
amount recalled was due to the number of intervening games
this can be applied to real life
weakness of forgetting pro and retro explanation
issue of validity as lots of research was lab expose meaning that people were forgetting due to the use of artificial challenges and so interference may be different in real life
strength of forgetting pro and retro explanation
some real life scenarios have been used for example Baddeley and Hitch 1977 showed how this can occur
