cognitive interview Flashcards
what is ROPE? (CI)
Recreate the context
Order should be changed
Perspectives can be changed
Everything to be reported back
what did Geiselman find?
89 students shown a police training video
students were interviewed 48 hours later individually
Interviewers either used standard interview techniques or the Cognitive Interview Schedule
The cognitive interview gave more correct items, about the same incorrect and confabulated items
what did Fisher in 1989 find?
trained detective with the Cognitive Interview Schedule and the assed their performance interviewing real crime witnesses
when compared with their old results some gained as much info over as 47%
why is reinstating context important?
recalling emotions and context act as cues for further details
why is reporting everything important?
witnesses might thing valuable info is not significant and details may act as cues
why is recalling from another perspective important?
prompts more retrieval paths
why is recalling in a different order important?
when saying it from start to finish, the schema will fill in blanks. If the order is changed this is avoided
positive evaluation of the cognitive interview
Berkerian and Bennet reviewed 27 cases showing that the CI gives more accurate information
It also helps to interview children
whats bad about the cognitive interview?
time consuming
specialist training is needed
not all aspects are important
inaccurate info is still gathered
not all techniques are suitable for children like change of perspective
