Multi-Store-Model Flashcards
how did the MSM view memory as?
unitary
what was the order of MSM?
Linear from sensory register - STM - LTM
what is the SR?
it is what receives information and passes it to the STM
how does the SR code?
the 5 senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch)
what is the duration of the SR
up to 1.5 seconds
what is the capacity of the SR?
it doesn’t last long enough to be measured (possibly huge)
what is the STM
it receives information from the SR and then either forgets it or goes to the LTM
how does the STM code?
acoustically (Baddely)
what is the capacity of the STM?
5-9 (mullers magic 7)
what is the duration of the STM?
up to 30 seconds (Peterson + Peterson)
what is the LTM?
where information ultimately stored
how does the LTM code?
semantically (Baddely)
what is the capacity of the LTM?
unlimited
what is the duration of the LTM?
infinite?
what is chunking?
when items are grouped to make them easier to remember eg a phone number 03647 246 734
what is maintenance rehersal?
when info form the STM is practice in order for it to progress to LTM eg subvocal recall
what is a memory trace?
a weak link in the LTM which is strengthened through rehearsal
what are 3 types of LTM?
semantic, episodic, procedural
what is semantic memory?
objective facts eg France is in Europe
what is episodic memory?
experiences that can be described eg toms wedding
what is procedural memory?
motor skills eg riding a bike
