What is a major depressive episode?
5 or more symptoms present nearly every day for at least two weeks, symptoms impair social interactions and not due to substance abuse.
What criteria do patients meet that have been diagnosed with a major depressive disorder?
MDE (Major Depressive Episode), no psychotic spectrum disorder and no manic/hypomanic episodes.
When do you know if a patient has gone through partial vs. full remission of a major depressive disorder?
Partial: symptoms present, full criteria not met. Full: no symptoms for 2 months

What is the significance of the locus coeruleus?
Noradrenergic neuron cell bodies live here (in the brainstem) and may underly depression, anxiety and attention disorders.
Where in the brain are the serotonergic neurons located?
Raphe nucleus
What are treatment guidelines for use of antidepressants?
Trial period: max recommended dose of 4-6 weeks. Stabilization period: 6-9 months at lower effective dose. Discontinuation period: tapered off.
