Anatomy-Brain Stem & Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What are the four main regions of the brainstem?
Long tracts, cranial nerve nuclei, cerebellar, reticular
What arteries supply the different regions of the brainstem?
Medulla: vertebral, anterior spinal & PICA. Pons: basilar. Midbrain: PCA.
Indicate whether the cranial nerve below is sensory, motor or both.
“Some say marry money but my brother says big brains matter more”
What are the seven classifications of cranial nerves?
Just know the function of these fibers, don’t worry about memorizing the names of the fibers.
Where are the cell bodies of the efferent cranial nerves located? What about the afferent fibers?
Efferent cell bodies: nuclei in the brainstem tegmentum. Afferent cell bodies: ganglion outside of the brainstem.
Where are the sensory and motor nuclei of cranial nerves located in the brainstem?
Sensory: lateral. Motor: medial.
Where would you slice through the brainstem if you wanted to get an axial view of all 6 columns of nuclei?
Upper medulla. Not all 6 nuclei extend through the entire brainstem.
