Physiology-Sleep Disorders Flashcards
What stage of sleep are you in when you are watching a lecture, hit your head on the table and pop back up?
Stage 1.
What stage of sleep is responsible for secreting growth hormones to repair tissue and solidify long term memory?
Stage 3 and REM sleep.
Why does caffeine keep you awake longer?
The longer you are awake, the more calories you burn. The more calories you burn the more adenosine strengthens sleep drive. Caffeine antagonizes sleep drive.
What makes COPD a significant concern in sleep medicine?
*
Why do smokers have worse cough in the morning?
Mucociliary clearance is diminished during sleep
Why do east coast teams lose to west coast teams 2/3 of the time in games played on the west coast?
Pulmonary function is worst in the early morning and best in the early afternoon. East coast teams may have decreased pulmonary function compared to a west coast team when playing on the west coast.
Why do most MIs occur in the early morning?
Rapid changes in BP happen when you wake up
Why are people lying when they say they get by fine on about 6 hours of sleep?
As you increase sleep debt and your circadian rhythm changes you become tolerant to the sleep drive effects of adenosine.
What effects does chronic sleep restriction have on the brain?
Prefrontal cortex atrophies from decreased blood flow. This impairs cognitive speed & accuracy, critical reasoning and situational awareness. This may be the root of ADHD in kids.
What is responsible for the weight gain seen in people who are chronically sleep deprived?
Imbalance of the hormones leptin & ghrelin stimulate hunger and you take in more calories, meanwhile you are decreasing metabolism and gaining weight.
What happens as you begin to accumulate sleep debt?
The amount of attention lapses (micro sleeps) increase. Recovery is very difficult.
