Anatomy-Internal Topography of the Brain Flashcards
Identify the structures indicated in the image below.

SP: septum pellucidum, AC: anterior commissure, LT: lamina terminalis

Identify the structures indicated in the image below.

*

What structure is indicated in the image below?

Putamen. This is the most lateral portion of the lentiform nucleus. It merges with the head of the caudate rostrally.

Identify the structures indicated in the image below.

These are the longitudinal divisions of the brainstem.

Identify the structures indicated in the image below.

IVF, III Ventricle, Cerebral Aqueduct, IV Ventricle and Central canal

What structures is the choroid plexus associated with?
Body, trigone & inferior horn of lateral ventricle, IVF, roof of III ventricle, caudal roof of IV ventricle and Foramina of Luschka

How does CSF circulate around the brain?
Made by the choroid plexus -> lateral ventricle -> IVF -> III Ventricle -> Cerebral Aqueduct -> IV Ventricle -> Foramina of Luschka or Foramen of Magendie -> Subarachnoid space -> superior sagittal sinus (venous system)

What structure is indicated in the image below?

The caudate head and body
What structures are indicated in the image below?

The medial and lateral pallidal segments of the globes pallidus

What structure forms the medial wall of the lateral ventricle?
Septum pellucidum.
What are the different divisions of the fornix?
Arises from the hippocampus, the body (arches over the thalamus) and the column (descending portion anterior to the thalamus)
What structure lies rostral to the column of the fornix and interconnects the two temporal lobes?
Anterior commissure
What structure represents the diencephalon/telencephalon junction?
Lamina terminalis. It extends from the anterior commissure to the optic chiasm at the base of the diencephalon.
What structure is sometimes seen in brains that interconnects the two thalami across the third ventricle?
Massa intermedia.
What is the main function of the thalamus?
It is the main relay center where almost all signals pass through when going to and from the cerebral cortex.
What is the main function of the hypothalamus?
Regulation and coordination of autonomic, behavioral and endocrine functions.
What landmark might you look for when trying to locate the posterior commissure?
Pineal body. The posterior commissure is a small white band located rostral and ventral to the pineal body.
What separates the cerebellum from the pons and medulla?
4th ventricle
How is the cerebellum connected to the brainstem?
3 Cerebellar peduncles
What are the different regions of the lateral ventricle?
Anterior horn, body, trigone, posterior hour and inferior horn
What openings exist in the 4th ventricle?
2 lateral wall openings (foramina of Luschka) and 1 medial wall opening (foramen of Magendie)
