What are two common explanations for anxiety?
Learning theory (past experience), Cognitive distortion (castrophic thinking), ANS-monamine-GABA dysregulation.
3 types of anxiety symptoms?
Free-floating (constant), panic (sudden) and phobic (specific)
Most common substance-induced anxieties?
Alcohol, caffeine, medications and illicit drugs.
Diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder?
Excessive worry, 6+ months, at least 3: “Macbeth (muscle tension) Frets (fatigue) Constantly (concentration difficulty) Regarding (restless) Illicit (irritable) Sins (sleep disturbance)
Anxiety disorder treatment?
SSRI, buspirone, imipramine, venlafaxine, benzos.
Diagnostic criteria for panic disorder?
1+ uncued panic attacks. 1+ months of persistent worry and behavior change due to anticipation of another attack and its complications. With or without agoraphobia.
Diagnostic criteria for agoraphobia?
Fear and/or avoidance of certain situations. Situations provoke anxiety. 6+ months duration.
Treatment for panic disorders?
CBT, SSIRs, Venlafaxine, Imipramine and Benzos (for acute attacks)
Diagnostic criteria for specific phobias?
Irrational fear of certain stimulus. 6+ months of impairment or distress.
Diagnostic criteria for socia phobia (social anxiety disorder)?
Fear about embarrassment in social situations. 6+ months of distress or impairment.
Phobia treatment
Beta blockers, SSRIs (paroxetine), MAOIs
Diagnostic criteria for selective mutism?
Failure to speak in social situations, interferes with life, not due to language skills or other disorders.
Most prevalent anxiety disorder in children?
Separation anxiety disorder
Common anxiety comorbidities?
Depression, schizophrenia
