proton pump inhibitors Flashcards
Indications of proton pump inhibitors?
GORD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastric or duodenal ulcers, benign gastric ulcers, severe oesophagitis, acid related dyspepsia, maintenance therapy for peptic ulcers, eradication of Helicobacter pylori
Contraindications of proton pump inhibitors?
none
Mechanism of action of proton pump inhibitors?
inhibits gastric acid (HCl) secretion by blocking the proton pump (H, K-ATPase) enzyme system on the apical membrane of the gastric parietal cells - lowering overall stomach acid levels
Side effects of proton pump inhibitors?
nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, dizziness
Monitoring requirements for proton pump inhibitors?
measurement of serum-magnesium concentration should be considered before and during prolonged treatment with a proton pump inhibitor, especially if the patient is taking other drugs that can cause hypomagnesaemia
Treatment cessation of proton pump inhibitors?
rebound acid secretion
Patient and carer advice for proton pump inhibitors?
counselling on administration should be specifically advised and followed. don’t chew or crush capsule. children can only have omeprazole and lansoprazole. take 30 minutes before food
