intestinal obstruction, galactosaemia

first line therapy for constipation in children, second line therapy for constipation in adults
What is the mechanism of action of osmotic laxatives?
increases the amount of water in the large bowel by drawing fluid from the body into the bowel via osmosis, this softens the stool and produces distension which increases the number of bowel movements
What are the side effects of osmotic laxatives?
flatulence, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, abdominal discomfort

Treatment cessation for osmotic laxatives
none
Patient and carer advice for osmotic laxatives
drink sufficient amount of fluids, be careful in those who are lactose intolerant
