diuretics (thiazide) Flashcards
Indications of diuretics
oedema, hypertension
Contraindications of diuretics
hyponatraemia, refractory hypokalaemia, symptomatic hyperuricaemia, hypercalcaemia, addisons disease
Mechanism of action of diuretics
inhibits the renal tubular absorption of salt and water and reduces the absorption of electrolytes by its action at the beginning of the distal convoluted tubule. this increases the excretion of sodium and chloride ions and consequently of water. hypotensive effect is due to reduction in peripheral resistance
Side effect of diuretics
altered plasma-lipid concentrations, gout, hypercalcaemia, hyperglycaemia, hyperuricaemia, hypochloraemia alkalosis, hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, hyponatraemia
Monitoring requirements of diuretics
monitor electrolytes
Treatment cessation of diuretics
none
Patient and carer advice for diuretics
monitor biochemistry
