What are the indications for benzos?
anxiety, insomnia, alcohol withdrawal, epilepsy, sedation, as a muscle relaxant
What are the contraindications for benzos?
acute pulmonary insufficiency or neuromuscular respiratory weakness, sleep apnoea syndrome, myasthenia gravis
What is the method of action for benzos?
increases the effectiveness of neurotransmitter GABA which suppresses the activity of nerves resulting in a sedative/anticonvulsant effect
What are the side effects of benzos?
drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, light-headedness, confusion, unsteadiness, slurred speech, muscle weakness, constipation, memory problems, dry mouth, blurred vision
What are the monitoring requirements for benzos?
monitor for signs of addiction/withdrawal when coming off
Treatment cessation in benzos?
stopping abruptly can lead to withdrawal side effects and potentially seizures
psychological effects - insomnia, agitation, anxiety, panic attacks
physical effects - weight loss, headache, tremors, sweating, palpitations and oversensitivity to light, sound and touch
Patient and carer advice for those on benzos?
benzos are a controlled drug and are reportable to the DVLA, drowsiness can lead to difficulty in driving and skilled tasks. addiction can occur after 4 weeks
