Indications of aspirin
cardiovascular disease, ischaemic attack/stroke, angina, reduce risk of stroke or myocardial infarction
Contra-indications of aspirin
haemophilia, bleeding disorders, children under 16 (Reyes syndrome), severe cardiac failure, previous/active peptic ulceration
Mechanism of action of aspirin
inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme which suppresses the production of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, this decreases platelet aggregation and inhibits thrombus formation
Common side effects of aspirin
gastrointestinal irritation/discomfort, nausea, increased bleeding, tinnitus, vertigo, confusion

Patient and carer advice for aspirin
inform patients of increased bleeding and bruising
