Indications
- Prevention and treatment of peptic ulcer disease inc. NSAID-assoc. ulcers
Mechanism of action
Reduce gastric secretions
Irreversibly inhibit the H+/K+ ATPase in gastric parietal cells
Adverse effects
GI disturbances
Headache
Increased risk of GI infection
Hyomagnesia (long-term use)
Warnings
May disguise symptoms of gastric cancer
Might increase risk of fracture with long term use
Interactions
May reduce anti-platelet effect of clopidogrel
Prescription
Oral and injectable.
Generally the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest time possible.
Administration
Oral preparations can be taken with food or on an empty stomach.
Communication
Explain that you are prescribing medication to reduce the production of stomach acid.
