Universal Declaration of Human Rights
the United Nations outline of the rights to which all human beings are entitled
International Court of Justice
settle disputes between countries based on international law, only if both sides agree to ask for its help
International Criminal Court
has the power to investigate and prosecute individuals, including political leaders, who commit war crimes, genocide or crimes against humanity.
rule of law
the principle that laws apply to all members of society equally; no one is above the law
Canadian Bill of Rights
outlines human rights for Canadians
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
the bill identifying human rights that are guaranteed to everyone in Canada; embedded in the Constitution of Canada
language rights/ Official Languages of Canada
- rights to receive government services in English or French
- to be educated in either English or French
- use either language in any federal court
Guarantee of rights and freedoms
live as a free citizen in a democratic nation, with certain legal limitations
Fundamental freedoms of conscience and religion
- religion of choice
- believe what I want
- express opinions freely without fear
- associate with whomever
- meet with others peacefully
Democratic Rights
- once 18, vote in elections at least once every 5 years
2. once 18, can run as a candidate in elections
Mobility Rights
- Enter, remain in, or leave Canada

Legal Rights
- right to life, liberty, and security of person
- not to be arbitrarily arrested and detained
- right to fair trial
- right to humane treatment
Equality Rights
- live, study, work, regardless of race, religion, origin, sex, age, and mental or physical ability
- right to be treated as equal before and under the law
Minority Language Educational Rights
- my children educated in French or English where sufficient numbers of students exist
Enforcement
- can go to court if any rights or freedoms are denied
