Prosocial behaviour Flashcards
What is prosocial behaviour?
Positive actions intended to help others
What are the two models of prosocial behaviour?
Egoistic: behaviours done for selfish reasons
Altruistic: behaviours done for selfless reasons
What is the negative state relief model? (linked to the egoistic model)
We provide help to relieve our own negative reaction (for ourselves)
What is the cost benefit analysis?
We are more likely to help others when we know it will help us as well (how does helping them, help ME)
What is the empathy-altruism model?
Helping those whose welfare is threatened, can occur even if the cost of helping is big, it can be argued that there are no selfless actions
What is the reciprocity norm?
We help others who have helped us
What is the social responsibility norm?
Sense of responsibility to society and their members
What are the two evolutionary reasons for helping?
Kin selection: more likely to help close relatives
Reciprocal altruism: if we help others, they may help our genetic line too
What is the bystander effect?
The more bystanders there are, the less likely you are to receiving help, or it may be delayed (thinking others will help)
What is the 5 steps of the decision model of bystander intervention?
Noticing: seeing the need for help
Interpreting: do we interpret the situation as an emergency?
Responsibility: feeling responsible for helping
Skills: do we have the skills to help
Providing help:
What other influences encourage helping? (5)
Mood: increases self-awareness, match our actual self
Attractiveness: we help attractive people
Similarity: those who look like us (ingroup)
Mimicry: acting the same way others do
Modelling: observe others
