What is a group?
Two or more people seen as unit and interacting with each other
What is cohesion?
Extent members are connected, shared background, history, etc. different members fulfill different functions
What is social facilitation?
Enhanced performance when around others ==> familiar or simple tasks
What is social inhibition?
hindered performance by presence of others ==> unfamiliar or difficult tasks
What leads to arousal? (3)
Mere presence: simple presence of others
Evaluation apprehension: feeling judged makes us feel self-conscious
Distraction: presence of others takes away from our performance
What is social loafing?
Being in a group decreases effort because we are not assessed as individual
What is deindividuation?
To let go of self-awareness (sense of self), often when you are anonymous, can lead to dangerous behaviours
What is the social identity deindividuation?
Instead of LOSING our identity, it is a SHIFT
What is group polarization?
Attitude or belief can become magnified after consensus with group
What is groupthink?
Desire for group to function smoothly can lead to ignoring other solution (keep the energy up)
What are transformational leaders and transactional leaders
Transformational: focus on building relationships and team goals
Transactional: authority structure, my way or the highway, less teamwork
What is the realistic conflict theory?
When different group compete for resources
What is the hostile attributional bias?
Assumption that others have hostile or negative intentions, belief that people are bad.
What is the biased perception?
We see ourselves as being right while others are biased
What is bargaining?
Seeking common ground, compromise to lower tension
