Properties of Organic Macromolecule Flashcards
Organic molecules
Contain elements CHO - Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen
-large variety of organic molecules due to C’s 4ve- chemistry
Inorganic molecules
Constitute nonliving matter, but still necessary and play important roles in living things.
Functional group
Are particular clusters of atoms that always behave in a certain way.
These groups are needed to make up different structures; “pieces to make up ____”
Macromolecules
Many molecules joined together.
Monomer
Simple organic molecule that exists individually. Is the base to make up organic macromolecules.
Polymer
Are large organic molecules formed by combining monomers (generally through dehydration reactions).
2 monomers = di+
3 monomers = tri+
Dehydration Reaction
Water components OH- + H+ are removed
Makes polymers by removing H2O
Hydrolysis Reaction
Water components OH- + H+ are added
Breaks/degrades polymers by adding H2O
