Carbohydrates Flashcards
Carbohydrates
Type of food that provide a source of energy for the body
- quick fuel source
- short-term energy storage
Simple Carbohydrate
Monosaccharides are monomers of carbohydrates
-are sugars with 3-7 carbon atoms
Hexose Carbohydrates
C6H12O6
- Glucose
- Fructose
- Galactose
They are all monomers and all have the same chemical formula, but their shapes and arrangement of atoms differ.
Disaccharides
Monomer +(dehydration reaction) monomer = disaccharide + 1 H2O
Maltose
Glucose + Glucose = _____ + 1 H2O
Sucrose
Fructose + Glucose = ________ + 1 H2O
Lactose
Galactose + Glucose = _________ + 1 H2O
Functional group of: Monosaccharide
Carbon ring completed by Oxygen
Polymer of: Carbohydrate
Polysaccharide
- glycogen
- starch
- cellulose
Starch
Polysaccharide of glucose molecules in a straight chain, somewhat branched.
Storage form of glucose in plants.
Glycogen
Polysaccharide of glucose molecules in a highly branched chain of glucose molecules.
Storage form of glucose in animals.
Stored temporarily in the liver (and muscle cells) so there is a constant ratio of glycogen in the bloodstream.
Cellulose
Polysaccharide of glucose molecules in a straight chain of glucose molecules.
Lends rigidity to plant cell walls (as long as they receive an adequate supply of water).
Linkage btwn glucose molecules go up then down (H-bonds) which the human body cannot process (can only process H-bonds going down = glycogen and starch).
Used as roughage and excreted through the system.
