Prokaryotes Flashcards
Prokaryotes
Archea and bacteria and prokaryotic cells
lack nuclei and membrane-bound ells
smalled living organism
live in extreme environments
more prokaryote cells than eukaryote
Diversity of Prokaryotes
lots of prokaryote cells but not dicoered cuz scientists can not go to extreme locations
Why are Prokaryotes Important
Hvae positive impact such as gut digestion, nutrient cycling, produce vitamins and use in food as probiotics (yogurt)
however it can be harmful due to pathogens= infection bacteria
Bacteria: General Characteristics
Has cell wall, membrane and cytoplasms
Has one chromsome called nulceoid
has ribosomes, pili and flagella
have plasmids and sticky capsule
characteristics explained
pili allows bacteria to move
flagella propells bacteria to move
sticky capsid prevents water loss, resists temperature changes and keep out antibiotic and virus
bacteria can trade plasmids with other bacterua
plasid dna can be resilt to antibodics (share this to other cells an dmutations)
Bacteria: Shapes
round (coccus), rod shaped (bacillues), spiralete (spiral)
can be diploccoi (pair), strepoccoi (chain), staphilloccous (clusters)
Ecoli
Escherichia Coli
some strands of ecoli are harmless
some are harmfull and can cause food posining
Somach ache
Shigella dysenteriae
causes cramps, fevers, dihera
Archea unqiuiess
cell walls and membrane are unquily chemically made up
have unqiue gentic code
live in extreme enviorment
Archea groups
Methanogens: make energy using using chemicals to gas, like low oxygen
Halophiles: like salt
Extreme thermophiles: like hot lcimate
Psychrophiles: like cold climates
Bacteria groups
green bacteria: :in salt or hot springs, photosthis diff from plants
cyanobacteria: symbiotic relationship with fungi, producer and nitrogen fixer is h20 and photosynthesis diff from plants
gram postive bacteria: probotcis in yogurts, step throat
spirochetes: spiral shaped flugeum in cytoplasm
chlamdiyas: cause clamida and are partstic sthat live with cells
proteobacteria:photosytheis differnet from plants, nirtogen fixing, uclers
