Principles of ROM Flashcards
Define Passive Range of Motion
Patient is not actively producing movement
Define Active Range of Motion
Completing the range of motion w/ m. power
Assisted Active Range of Motion
Helping w/ ROM but not doing all the work
Define flexibility
Ability of a muscle to elongate
Name 5 things that influence ROM
Ligaments (CT), Menisci (enhance surface area for load distribution), Joint capsules (hold bone to bone/stabilizers), Bursa (fluid filled sacs), hyaline cartilage (friction free surface providers)
When there is AROM is less than PROM:
force production problem
When PROM is less than AROM:
joint integrity issue
When PROM and AROM are limited:
something in the joint is limiting
Joint position v. Joint excursion
ROM is a position
Excursion is one ROM to another
Use AROM if:
you want to improve m. force production
increase m. performance
Use PROM if:
If patient cannot perform AROM and you want to improve ROM
manual therapy
when the motion is difficult for the patient to produce naturally
more reps are possible
