Q

Name the three approaches to strength testing

A

Isotonic: 1 range of motion/max weight the patient can do one time at full ROM
Isokinetic: Testing ROM at a given speed/Dynamometer
Isometric: force without change in m. length

Q

What is Manual Muscle Testing?

A

Sys. of measurement using manually applied resistance to determine the strength of a m. based on gravity

Q

Name all the MMT grades

A

Normal (N or 5): Full available ROM, against gravity, and able to hold against maximal manual resistance
Good (G or 4): Full available ROM, against gravity, and able to hold against moderate manual resistance
Fair (F or 3+): Full available ROM, against gravity, and able to hold against minimal manual resistance
Fair (F or 3): Full available ROM, against gravity, held against no manual resistance
Fair - (F- or 3-): move through more than half the available range of motion against gravity and no manual resistance
Poor + (P+ or 2+): move through less than half the available range of motion against gravity and no manual resistance
Poor (P or 2): Able to move through full available range of in a gravity minimized position
Poor - (P- or 2-): Able to move through partial range of motion in a gravity minimized position and no manual resistance
Trace (T or 1): No joint motion, gravity minimized position, muscle contraction palpable or observable
Zero (0): No observable or palpable muscle contraction

Q

MMT procedure

A

Explain purpose to patient, begin with fair test (stabilize), apply resistance mid range if passed; compare to uninvolved side

Q

What happens in the break test

A

PT applies resistance until m. contraction is overcome by PT

more force than make

Q

Weaknesses of MMT

A

Imprecise, validity issues, and ceiling effects (ex. quad. just b/c you can’t break resistance doesn’t mean both sides are moving optimally
