Primary Hyperparathyroidism Flashcards
What is primary hyperparathyroidism?
Bone resorption due to inappropriate secretion of PTH
What are the histiologic bone changes that occur in primary hyperthyroidism?
Osteitis fibrosa
What is the primary cause of primary hyperparathyroidism?
Parathyroid adenomas
What effect does PTH have on the kidney?
Increase calcium reabsorption and increase 1Alpha-Hydroxylase activity (increasing active Vit D)
What is a “brown tumor” associated with?
Endstage of primary hyperparathyroidism in which areas of fibrosis contain reactive woven bone and heosiderin-laden macrophages
What is the classic finding of osteitis fibrosa cystica?
Presence of multiple, localized, lytic lesions, which represent hemorrhagic cysts or masses of fibrous tissue
What are the classic clinical findings of primary hyperparathyroidism?
Stones, Moans, Bones, and Groans
