Osteoporosis Flashcards
What is osteoporosis?
Metabolic bone disease in normally mineralized bone is decreased in mass to the point that it no longer provides adequate mechanical support
What is the general underlying mechanism of osteoporosis?
Enhanced bone resorption relative to formation
What is the most common variety of osteoporosis? Cause?
Primary; Unknown etiology
What is secondary osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis associated with a defined cause (ie endocrine)
What is the ratio of osteoclast/osteoblast activity in primary and secondary osteoporosis?
- Primary - increased osteoclast activity
- Secondary - decreased osteoblast activity
What are the two major determinants of primary osteoporosis?
Estrogen deficiency in women and aging process in both sexes
What is the ratio of osteoid to mineralized bone in osteoporosis?
Normal
What is the name of the bone lesion in which vertebral body compression fractures resulting in shorter stature and kyphosis?
Dowager’s hump
Most common cause of secondary osteoporosis?
Iatrogenic corticosteroid administration
What are causes of secondary osteoporosis?
- Endocrine
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Hyperthyroidism
- Hypogonadism
- Hematologic malignancies
- Malabsorption
- Alcoholism
