Modeling Abnormalities Flashcards
What is osteopetrosis?
Disease in which skeletal mass is increased as a result of abnormally dense bone
What is the cellular cause of osteopetrosis?
Failed osteoclastic bone resorption
What is one genetic mutation that contributes to osteopetrosis?
Carbonic anhydrase II gene (Autosomal Recessive)
What is seen on lab tests of a patient with osteopetrosis?
Suppression of hematopoiesis due to replacement of the marrow by sheets of abnormal osteoclasts or extensive fibrosis
How does the body compensate for loss of hematopoietic ability in osteopetrosis?
Increased hematopoiesis in liver, spleen, lymph nodes
What is Camurati-Engelmann Disease?
Progressive diaphyseal dysplasia- cylinderization does not proceed appropriately and long bone diaphyses become thickened
