Primary Economic Activity Flashcards
Reasons for The Central Valley Project in California
Summer drought is a feature of the Central Valley due to its Mediterranean type climate
In the North of the Valley the Sacramento River has a lot of water from the Rocky mountains, most of the good farm land is in the dry San Joachin Valley of the south
Solution= carry the plentiful waters of the north to the dry south
How was the Central Valley Project in California completed
Dams were built on the Sacramento river. Reservoirs were made
Canals and aqua ducts were built to transfer water from the north to the south of central valley
Water is stored in the reservoirs of the north for the summer drought in the south
Advantages of the Central Valley Project in California
Dry land in the south is irrigated
HEP is produced at the dams which is then used to pump water to the central valley
A wide range of food can be grown in the area to feed the cities of San Fran and LA
Disadvantages of the Central Valley Project in California
Reservoirs have flooded land. Some people had to leave their homes
Water loss through evaporation from canal and reservoirs is high. Water that remains is high in salt, not suitable for farming
The Scheme was too expensive to construct so water water charges and crops are high
Saudi Arabia: An oil-producing country
Produces the most oil in the world.
Situated in the Persian Gulf
Produces 10% of the world’s oil.
Saudi Arabia has changed from land of nomads to the wealthiest country in the world
Advantages to producing oil in Saudi Arabia
The export of oil generates huge income for the Government
This has led to an improvement in education, infrastructure ahd health services and raised the standard of living
It has generated vast numbers of employment opportunities for native Saudi people
Disadvantages of producing in Saudi Arabia
High level of political tension has led to the Saudi Government overspending on weapons in recent years
Despite many efforts there’s no improvement on women’s rights
Oil and gas in Ireland
We have not yet exploited large deposits if oil outside Ireland. Oil explorations:Barryroe Oil Field west Cork is said to have 1.6 billion barrels of oil
Gas exploration:Kinsale gas field supplies gas to Dublin and cities
Gas deposits:Discovered in Corrib Gas Field Mayo coast. Controversy should it br brought ashore
Positive effects of oil exploration in Irish Waters
Employment would increase as oil workers got jobs on rigs. Service industries would decelop to supply the rigs
The Irish government would get more tax revenue from workers and oil companies
Transport and housing would improve towns where most of the oil resources in the North Sea
Negative Effect if oil exploration in Irish waters
Pollution from oil spillage’s would increase
Wild life, marine life and beaches would suffer
Areas of natural beauty would suffer from heavy engineering side effects of oil exploration
Overfishing in Irish Water
Fish are high quality = high demand
Fish are found in large single species = easy to catch
Decline in fish stock elsewhere = foreign fishers come to Ireland
Less pollution in Irish coastal waters
Over-exploitation + depletion of stocks in Celtic Sea
Why did over-fishing occur in the Celtic Sea
Herron use shallow sheltered warm water near the coast to spawn. Easy to find fish
Herron were predictable coming to the area in October and January
Come in large schools, makes them an attractive catch
Before spawning, Herron are more suitable for processing and fetch the highest prices
Conservation measures for over-fishing in the Celtic Sea
1977 the EU banned Herron fishing in Celtic Sea
1982 set quota’s limiting the amount of fish each member state caught in a year
Surveys monitor the size of fish stock
Nets must have a mesh size to let small fish pass
Irish trawlers may fish within 10km of Irish coast EU member 20km
