Manufacturing Industry Flashcards
Transport facilities in Leixlip
Good transport links are vital for Intel
Microchips are exported from Dublin airport
Access to the airport via M50
The Intel plant is located close to the M4
Quality of Labour in Leixlip
Intel is a high-tech manufacturer
The industry is heavily dependent on laboratory discoveries, science and technology
Intel needs a highly educated workforce
More than 70% of Intels workers have third level qualifications
Process and output in Intel
Microchips are on polished wafers
The wafers pass through 300 processing steps
Hundreds of millions of transistors are created on each wafer
This process is known as micro technology because measurements are very small
Microchips are then tested and packaged
RUSAL
Located in Aughinish on the Shannon estuary 28km from Limerick city
A heavy industry which means it uses heavy or bulky materials
Its an alumina refinery that extracts alumina from the resource material bauxite
The alumina is exported to smelters in the UK and Scandinavia where it is smelted into aluminum
Government policy in RUSAL
Shannon development has been responsible for the economic development of the region
RUSAL Aughinish operates with an intergrated pollution control license issue by the EPA (environmental protection energy)
The license controls all emissions from the plant
Source of raw materials in RUSAL

The product alumina is re-exported therefore refinery is on a coastal location
Labour in RUSAL
700 people employed
Many workers live in the nearby towns of Foynes and Newcastle
The British Iron and Steel Industry Early 18th century
Iron making furnaces used charcoal from forests to smelt iron ore
Transport was poor therefore iron works were resource based
Forests were quickly cut down so the industries had to relocate near a new energy source:Coal
The British Iron and Steel Industry 19 century
During the industrial revolution demands for iron and steel were very high
Iron works were located near coalfields e.g Sheffield in England
Canals and railways were used to carry the iron ore to the iron and steel works
The coalfields remained the main location for smelting until the mid 20th century
The british Iron and and Steel Industry 1960s onwards
The British Iron and Steel Industry declined after the 1960s because of the following;Coalfields were exhausted, foreign steels makers in Germany and Japan were producing cheaper steel than the British,
The coast of Britain became a more attractive location for steel plants as iron ore could b imported
Inland steel plants closed with great job losses
Government policy in Leixlip
The irish government supported the IDA supported the establishment of Intel in Leixlip in 1989 through grants a d tax incentives
