Earthquakes Flashcards
What are aftershocks?
They are smaller tremors but could do more damage since the buildings and roads have been destroyed. This sometimes happens after earthquakes
How can an Earthquake occur?
When two plates rub against each other they cause a friction which makes it hard to move this releases energy and pressure.
What is a tremor.
Tremors are waves that read the focus
Where and what is an epicentre?
The epicentre is where the pressure is released under the focus .
What is the focus?
The where the pressure was released on the crust
What is the fault?
The fault is the crack caused by the pressure from the plates rubbing againsg each other
What do you use to measure the tremors of an earthquake
A seismograph
What is used to measure how strong an earthquake was?
The richter scale
What is a frame in the Seismograph
The frame in a richter scale a part of the richter scale and vibrates when an earthquake starts
How come the weight doesn’t move in the Seismograph
Because it’s hanging on a spring
What does the weight do in the Seismograph
The weight has a pen at the end and records the tremors on the rotating drum.
How many earthquakes are there each year?
500,000 earthquakes happen each year
