Mass Movement Flashcards
Describe Gradient?
Gradient is how steep the slope in mass movement
What are the four influences of mass movement?
Gradient, water content, human activity and vegetation.
Describe water content?
Water makes the loose materials heavier and lubricant
Describe human activity?
The more human activity present the steeper it is which could make it collapse
Describe vegetation?
The roots of trees and plants binds the regolith and slows the speed of mass movement
How is soil creep caused?
Soil creep is caused by gravity and moves 1 cm a year.Soil gathers in a series of steps called terracettes.
How are landslides caused?
Its caused when an unstable slope collapsed and is caused by rainfall.
Name a landslide.
In Mayo in 2003 there was a landslide.
How is mudflow caused?
Its caused like landslide but gets saturated and turns from soil to mud river.
How can earthquakes cause a landslides?
The tremors of an earthquake loosens the soil.
Name an eaxample of mudflow?
The volcano of Nevado del Ruiz.
How did the mudflow start in the volcano Nevado del Ruiz?
When the volcano erupted and heat made water and mixed with ashes and collected soil and rocks on the way aswell wich makes the mud.
