Primary Economic Activities- bogs, farming, and fishing Flashcards
What was peat traditionally harvested by
A slean
Where are raised bogs usually found
Information
Found in the Midlands of Ireland , the lowland
They are an average depth of bout 8m but can be up to 12m deep.
Black water bog, co.offaly.
How much water is in a bog on average
95%
What makes it quick to harvest peat
Modern machinery
Why was bord na móna established
It was in 1946 by the government to exploit Ireland’s hogs to get energy.
4 phases of the exploitation of a bog
Drain the bog
Peat is harvested
Peat is transported
Peat is marketed
Sages in production of milled peat
Ditcher- drains the bog
Grader-levels the bog
Miller- scrapes off the shallow layer of peat on top of the peat.
Harrow- is pulled by a tractor to Harrow or dry the bog.
Ridger- collects the peat into ridges and then it’s covered in plastic to be protect it from the rain.
It’s transported by light railways
Three or four peat products
Moss peat
Briquettes
Milled peat
What is a continental shelf
An area close to land where shoals of fish can thrive
Is fishing a renewable or non renewable resource
It can be renewable if we manage it but if we don’t then fish will run out
What happened to fishing when Ireland joined the EU
Ireland fishing industry was small until they joined the EU. When they joined they gave control of its fisheries to Brussels and had to share their fishing seas with other countries. The catching of fish in numbers increases massively and the majority of fish caught are by foreign trawlers
Describe the nets on the fishing trawlers.
They are big and invisible to fish. Unbreakable
Name methods used to locate fish on a trawler
The sonar or radar use to locate shoals
Three fishing methods, trawlers
Purse seining
Trawling
Drift netting
Reasons for overfishing:
Too many well equipped trawlers are chasing too few fish, technology
When Ireland joined EU they gave up control of their waters and it was open to foreign trawlers
Juvenile fish are being caught because the nets have small mesh
Steps used to conserve fish stocks are
Quotas are placed
Number of trawlers is reducing as fishermen can retire with an EU pension.
Nets mesh are bigger so juvenile fish can escape
Fishing season for some fish has been shortened
Conservation zones are set up
Ban on fishing endangered species
What is the irish conservation box
An area is a spawning ground for some soon to be extinct fish, fishing here is strictly forbidden
What is farming
It’s a system with inputs, processes and outputs
What’s an input
Something people get into a farm…….. To help work
Ex:tractor, livestock
What is a process
A task the farmer carries out
Ex: milking the cows
What is an output
An output is the produce from the farm
What is a mixed farm
A farm that specialises in more than one activity
Ex: dairy farm and a beef farm.
On the farm what happens in spring
Lambs are born
Calls are born
Spreads fertilisers
On the farm what happens in summer
Breeding session
Farmer cuts the silage
Animals crazed in the fields.
On the farm what happens in autumn/winter
Livestock sold
Cattle are housed indoors
Peat is renewable or non- renewable
Non renewable
Give at least two inputs, processes and outputs of a farm you have studied
Mixed farm in Meath- dairy/pastoral/arable
Inputs-flat land with good drainage, machinery milking machines, sheds, slurry tank
Processess- milking cows, feeding and caring for animals , ploughing
Outputs- calves, milk, crops, beef
