Climate Flashcards
Name two factors that influence local climate
- Aspect
- Altitude
What is latitude
Distance north/south of equator Colder further away from equator
Explain distance from sea/ocean
Seawater absorbs heat slowly in summer and loses heat slowly in winter. Closer to sea=cool in summer, warmer in winter. Small temperature range
Name the three factors that influence climate
Latitude, distance from the sea, prevailing winds and ocean currents
What are the main world climates?
Hot, temperate, cold
Explain aspect
Aspect refers to the direction in which a slope is facing. Example north or south facing slope. A south facing slope is warmer
Explain why south facing slopes are warmer
The sun shines directly onto south facing slopes Warm southerly winds blow against south facing slopes Protected from cold northerly winds
Explain altitude
Altitude is the height above sea level. As you go up 1000m the temperature drops 7 degrees.
Why is it colder the higher up you go?
The higher you go up the thinner the air is and the air can hold less heat. Up,and areas are more exposed to wind.
Name the types of hot climate
- Equatorial
- savanna
- desert
Name the types of temperate climate
- Cool temperate
- Warm temperate
What is warm temperate climate also known as?
Mediterranean climate
Name the types of cold climate
- Boreal
- tundra
Explain how prevailing wind effects climate
Winds and air masses make an area colder, warmer, dryer or wetter. Their influence will depend on the direction they come from.
