Define prescription
Order for medication issued by a physician, other licensed medical practitioner addressed to pharmacist to dispense a medication
Define drug
A chemical substance that affects processes in living organism and used for treatment, prophylaxis or diagnosis of the disease
What are OTC drugs?
Drugs that do not require prescription
What are prescription drugs?
Drugs that have the potential to cause adverse effects, require monitoring, used only for restricted time period
What are parts of a prescription?
Heading → date and personal data of patient
Body → superscription, inscription, subscription
Closing → signature of patient and physician
Why is there a need for date?
To know when the medicine is prescribed and to prevent the misuse of the prescription
What does the heading contain?
Information about the prescriber and the patient
What is superscription?
Rx → recipe
What is inscription?
Main part of the prescription, gives the information about the name of the drug, its formulation and unit dosage
What is subscription?
Provides information to the pharmacists about the quantity and dosage form of the drug to be dispensed
What is transcription?
Prescribers direction to the patient contains instruction about the amount of drug, time and frequency of doses to be taken
