idiopathic
bilateral oophorectomy
radiotherapy/chemotherapy
infection: mumps
autoimmune
resistant ovary syndrome: due to FSH receptor abnormalities
presentation of premature ovarian insufficiency
similar to menopause
hot flushes/night sweats
infertility
secondary amenorrhoea
raised FSH/LH levels
low oestradiol
management of premature ovarian insufficiency
HRT or COCP until the average age of menopause
diagnosis of premature ovarian insufficiency
made on the basis of repeat raised FSH results after a period of 4-6 weeks
