Prelim Malaria Flashcards
1
Q
James and Pa
A
- Vaccines have been developed and are on trial in Colombia and Gambia
- These can be administered through PHC schemes and would reduce the incidence of Malaria in children and reduce infant mortality rates
2
Q
Education
A
- Education is an effective, easy and non expensive way of fighting malaria - done through PHC again to tell people about bed nets, covering the skin and screen use to prevent house entry
3
Q
The methods are effective
A
- Bed nets are cheap and prevent people from getting bitten and so cannot catch the disease
- Both visitors and locals can take the drugs but have to be taken regularly and are expensive
4
Q
And the Drainage, Insecticide?
A
- Draining of stagnant water areas such as puddles and swamps is effective as it reduces breeding areas but having rainfall daily in tropical areas would produce these areas all the time, time consuming and must be done daily.
- Insecticides such as DDT can be used to kill off mosquitos and their larvae but mosquitos become more immune all the time and DDT is harmful and banned in some areas.
5
Q
Egg whites?
A
- Use of egg whites in areas of stagnant water are used to kill off larvae through suffocation but in areas of food shortage this is regarded as a waste, especially seeing as only the whites are used and yolks get wasted.
6
Q
Methods use to prevent Malaria
African country that has been effected
A
- Drugs like chloroquine can be given to people to stop them catching it.
- This is cheap to produce but mosquitos have developed an immunity to it and it is expensive to produce in places such as Malawi
- Malarone can be used on children and has no side effects, it is new and has the potential to do well
