Malaria Solutions With Effectiveness Flashcards
Use of malerone
New drug which has no side effects and can be used in children - has potential
Draining of areas of stagnant water
Reduces area where anopheles can lay her eggs but in tropical areas where heavy rainfall occurs on a daily basis means that these areas are constantly being filled up again and so would have to be drained daily - time consuming and hard work
Use of chloroquine
Kills off mosquitos
Mosquitos becoming more resistant to it all the time
In developing countries the majority of people cannot afford this expensive drug
Vaccines
Developed in Colombia and Gambia which would wipe out the disease but are still on trial
Could be used in PHC schemes in developing countries and for those without access previously
Egg Whites
Used in areas of stagnant water can be used to suffocate anopheles larvae by clogging up their airways, drowning them
In areas of food shortage this causes conflict as this would be regarded as a waste as only egg whites used - yolks go to waste
Sleeping under bed nets at night
Prevents person from being bitten and so reduces their chances of getting the disease
Risk factors for malaria
Areas of stagnant water provide perfect conditions for the anopheles to lay her eggs - staying beside a swamp/lake
More densely populated areas provide blood reservoirs for the mosquito to bite and infect people
Staying in areas where the temperature is consistently above 16 degrees Celsius provides ideal temperatures for mosquito larvae to develop
