PRELIM 05 - Homeostasis Flashcards
The existence and maintenance of a relatively constant environment within the body
Homeostasis
Term that means ‘the same’
Homeo
Term that means ‘to stop’
Stasis
Measure of body properties that may change in value
Variables
Normal extent of increase or decrease around a set point
Normal range
Normal or average value of a variable over time
Set point
Responds to changes in the environment; sends information to the control center
Receptor
Determines set point, analyzes information, and determines appropriate response
Control center
Provides a means for response to the stimulus
Effector
Is the main mechanism used in homeostatic regulation; involves deviation away from set point
Negative feedback
Example of negative feedback
Blood glucose level
Occurs when the initial stimulus further stimulates the response
Positive feedback
4 examples of positive feedback
Childbirth, Lactation, Ovulation, Blood clotting
Stretching of uterine walls causes contractions that further stretch the walls
Childbirth
The child feeding stimulates milk production which causes further feeding
Lactation
