pregnancy Flashcards
how much weight gain is normal during pregnancy?
25-35 lbs
what are some MSK/postural changes during preganacy?
forward head, anterior pelvic tilt, lordosis, kyphosis, COM shifts anterior
what’s the hormone during pregnancy that makes ligaments lax?
relaxin
what can you wear for SIJ support?
sacral belt
what happens to BP during pregancy?
decreases in 1st and 2nd trimester, increases in 3rd (both systolic and diastolic)
what does lying in supine do for pregnant woman?
can cause compression of inferior vena cava (after 4th month, no supine lying after 1st trimester)
do not exceed 5 min in supine
what happens to resting HR during pregnancy?
increases by 10-20 bpm
what lying position is best for pregnant woman and why?
Left side lying, maximizes CO, decreases GERD and compression on inferior vena cava, relaxes organs
what happens to CO and metabolic rate in pregnant women?
increases
what happens to fasting blood glucose in pregnant women?
decreases
are pregnant woman cold or heat intolerant?
heat
does respiratory rate change with pregnancy?
no
do pregnant woman take deeper breaths?
yes, depth of respiration increases
whats gestational DM?
DM developed during pregnancy. Increased blood glucose during pregnancy, usually goes away after delivery
what’s an ectopic pregnancy and what may occur during?
when the fertilized egg is in the fallopian tube instead of uterus. can cause pelvic p! and vaginal bleeding
when would eclampsia occur? what can happen?
after delivery, seizures
what is preeclampsia and when does it occur?
pregnancy induces acute hypertension after 20th week of gestation/third trimester
may see hyperreflexia, increased protein in urine, edema, headache, sudden weight gain, no seizures
BP > 140/90, a second reading of that after 4 hours confirms dx
is preeclampsia an emergency?
yes!
whats diastasis recti?
splitting of rectus abdominis from linea alba
what do you do if diastasis recti is more than 6 cm?
refer out
what do you do if diastasis recti is >4cm?
bracing and breathing exercises
what do you do if diastasis recti is between 3-4 cm?
ab bracing with head lift (not the same as a crunch)
progression: add posterior pelvic tilts
how do you assess diastasis recti?
pt lays in hooklying, ask them to to curl up, if 2 fingers sink in to line it’s confirmed
all abdominal contractions must be performed with an exhalation to minimize…
intra-abdominal pressure
what exercises should I avoid with diastasis recti bc they put too much stress on the abdomen?
crunches, situps, double leg lifts, fire hydrants
laying supine (increase/decreases) pressure on the inferior vena cava, causing a (increase/decrease) in venous return and CO
increase in pressure
causes decrease in venous return and CO
