Q

Explain what products are produced in an aqueous solution during electrolysis

A

metal more reactive than hydrogen =hydrogen gas produced cathode
less reactive=solid layer of metal formed
if OH- ions (from water) and halide ions present molecules of em will be formed.
if not oxygen produced

Q

Describe how electrolysis is used to make copper pure.

A

use copper elctrodes
A starts off as impure copper
Electrolyte-copper sulfate solution
C-pure copper
impure c at A oxidised dissolving into E form c ions
c ions reduced at pure copper C and + to it as layer of pure copper
impurities from A sink to bottom of cell =sludge.
